Trump Campaign Now Accepts Crypto Donations

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has taken a significant step forward in embracing digital currency, announcing that it will now accept cryptocurrency donations. This move marks a significant shift from Trump’s previous skepticism towards the industry during his presidency.

The Trump campaign has launched a website where donors can make contributions to his joint fundraising committees via Coinbase, making him the first major party presidential nominee to accept digital currency. This move comes as Trump appears to be making gains on President Joe Biden’s fundraising lead, with his campaign and the Republican National Committee reporting a significant increase in fundraising totals.

“I’m not a fan of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies,” Trump said during his presidency. However, he has since warmed up to the industry, investing in crypto both personally and politically.

Trump has invested in crypto, with an estimated $3 million in cryptocurrency as part of his $7 billion net worth, according to Forbes estimates. He has also launched a set of NFT “trading cards” and has courted the industry, hosting a dinner for crypto backers at Mar-A-Lago earlier this month.

The industry has lobbied heavily for a bill that would shift regulatory oversight of digital currency from the Securities and Exchange Commission to the more industry-friendly Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The bill is expected to pass the House this week, despite the White House warning that Biden would veto the legislation.

“Limiting the SEC’s ability to maintain a comprehensive and effective financial regulatory framework for crypto-assets would introduce substantial financial instability and market uncertainty,” the White House said earlier this month.

As the crypto industry continues to evolve, Trump’s campaign is poised to capitalize on the trend. With his campaign now accepting cryptocurrency donations, it will be interesting to see how this move impacts his fundraising efforts.
