The Rise of Cryptocurrency Scams: A Cautionary Tale
Cryptocurrency traders, beware! The world of cryptocurrency is fraught with scams, and the latest incident involving a trader who lost nearly $70 million in an ‘address poisoning’ scam is a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk in the shadows of the crypto universe.
The Scam: A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
In this particular scam, thieves created spoof accounts of the victim’s online crypto address, sending a small amount of currency to the victim in hopes that they would accidentally send money to the fake address later. This is known as ‘address poisoning,’ and it’s a tactic that’s becoming increasingly popular among scammers.
The Consequences: A $70 Million Loss
The victim’s crypto wallet now shows a total loss of around 97% of its assets on Coinbase, with the account worth just over $1.6 million. The scammers traded the stolen Bitcoin for 23,000 Ethereum and then transferred the funds. Ethereum is currently trading at $3,116 a coin, according to The Daily Hodl.
The Bigger Picture: Crypto-Related Scams on the Rise
Cryptocurrency-related scams are on the rise, with the FBI’s 2023 internet crime report revealing that crypto-related frauds cost investors a staggering $3.94 billion last year. This makes up more than three-quarters of the year’s investment scam losses.
A Glimmer of Hope: Block’s Bitcoin Blueprint
In more positive news, payments firm Block (SQ) has begun a dollar cost averaging (DCA) program to add to its already sizable bitcoin (BTC) stack. Led by CEO Jack Dorsey, the company plans to use 10% of its monthly bitcoin-related gross profit to buy additional bitcoin each month for the remainder of 2024.
